Leading Drummer Michael Ambech, Grade 2 band
Michael started playing at the age of 12 in FDF Frederiksberg Tambourkorps. His first instructor was Elo Bruun Djernæs, whom today is playing bass in our grade 4 band. At the age of 14 Michael joined the now defunct Lochlann Pipe Band, where he was taught by Tom Andersen and Stig Søgaard.
He was appointed leading drummer in 1993 after Tom Andersen stepped down. Michael spend the next couple of years teaching young drummers in the band. Soon the drumcorps started moving up in tables at various band-competitions, and at the solo scene Michaels name began popping up. The first time that happened was in 1992, where he was awarded 1st prize in the March Beginners competition at the Scandinavian Championships in Slagelse.
In 1996 Michael was among the students at the 1st annual Scandinavian School of piping & Drumming. Tom Brown (Boghall & Bathgate Caledonia Pipe Band) was the instructor, and he had a huge impact on Michaels playing ability. In 1997 Michael went to Vancouver, Canada to play with the present Robert Malcolm Memorial Pipe Band (RMMPB). At the time, the name of the band was The Simon Fraser Alumni Association Pipe Band, and was playing in grade 2. In the 8 months Michael spent in Canada he recieved tuition from J. Reid Maxwell (Simon Fraser University Pipe Band) and it was here his skills as a pipe band drummer was honed. He returned to Canada twice, in 1998 and 1999, to play with the band during the summer competitions.
In 1998 The Lochlann Pipe Band was shut down, and most of the remaining band members moved to The Heather Pipes & Drums, grade 4 band (HP&D). The succes of this move soon became eveident as the drumcorp won the scandinavian championship in 1999 and the danish championship from 2000-2002. During that same period, Michael found the time to play with the grade 2 band. In the late summer of 2002, Michael took over the vancant post as lead tip of Holbæk Pipe Band (HPB). Michael enjoyed a succesful season with the band, and also won the scandinavian solo drumming title in 2003. This title was followed up by yet another scandinavian solo title, as
well as the title of "Champion of Champions"
2004 and again in 2005. In september 2003 Michael went back to play with HP&D in grade 2. Here he took part in winning the scandinavian championship in 2004.
